Live In Maple Valley

Maple Valley, WA Community

Hey there! Are you curious about the history of Maple Valley, Washington? Let’s dive into the fascinating story of this charming town. Maple Valley has a rich past that’s full of adventure, growth, and transformation. From its early days as a coal and lumber town to its current status as a thriving residential community, Maple Valley has a lot to offer.

Early Settlement and Growth

Maple Valley was first settled in 1879 by pioneers like George Ames, Henry Sidebotham, and C.O. Russell. These trailblazers brought their families and started improving a trail that would eventually become the heart of the community. The town’s name was decided in a rather unusual way—by drawing from a hat! Ames suggested “Vine Maple Valley,” while Russell preferred “Maple Ridge.”

In the end, “Vine Maple Valley” won, but the post office later dropped the “Vine” because it made the name too long. Russell laid out the town in 1887, and it was officially platted in 1890.

In its early years, Maple Valley thrived in the coal and lumber industries. The railroad played a crucial role, connecting the town to nearby mining towns like Black Diamond. By 1885, trains began hauling coal over a narrow gauge track from Black Diamond. The track was widened in 1904, and by 1907, the Milwaukee Road pushed through the Cascades, bringing more workers and growth to the area.

The Golden Years: Gaffney’s Grove

One of the most iconic landmarks in Maple Valley’s history is Gaffney’s Grove, a resort that opened in the mid-1920s on Lake Wilderness. This wasn’t just any resort—it featured a ballroom, restaurant, roller rink, airstrip, lodge, rental cabins, bowling alley, and even a golf course! Gaffney’s Grove was the place to be for entertainment and leisure. However, by the 1960s, it had closed its doors, marking the end of an era.

Transformation and Growth

The 1960s brought significant changes to Maple Valley. With the opening of Route 18 between Auburn and North Bend, residents could easily commute to larger cities like Seattle. This shift transformed Maple Valley from an industrial town to a residential community. The population grew steadily, attracting families who valued its proximity to urban centers while enjoying a quieter lifestyle.

Incorporation and Modern Maple Valley

In 1997, Maple Valley officially became a city. This marked a new chapter in its history, focusing on community development and family-friendly living. Today, Maple Valley is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere and is often listed among the best places to live in Washington State and the U.S.
